Travel to Grand Port

Blue Bay Beach

When arriving by air to Mauritius, you will first travel to Grand Port, where the airport is located. I stayed for a couple of nights in the Holiday Inn right next to the hotel. This was really convenient to have some rest and relaxation. Also, they had a free shuttle to the Holiday Inn Beach house near Blue Bay. From there it was easy to walk into the Blue Bay town. The beaches were the main highlight, and local friends didn’t recommend anything else in Grand Port. However, it was a great place to stop through for arrival and departure.

Before you go

  • Grand Port is located on the southeast side of Mauritius Island
  • It is the location of the major international airport
  • There are some natural sights to see including beautiful beaches. However, most people prefer the western coast

Transport

  • Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is located in the Grand Port District
  • Getting around the area, it is possible to go by taxi or hire a car
  • My hotel also had a free shuttle to the beach area
  • For closer distances, it is possible to bike but probably too far to walk for sightseeing

Accommodation

  • As usual I recommend checking reviews on Booking.com or using AirBnB
  • After arriving at the airport I spent the first two nights at the Holiday Inn Mauritius Mon Trésor. This felt very luxurious after some interesting stays in Madagascar. The rooms were large and comfortable. And they had a free shuttle to their private beach house in Blue Bay.

Food

During my short stay, I only at at the hotel and at Restaurant Le Bougainville. The menu at the restaurant was a great variety of local foods. It’s located in the small town right near the coast at Blue Bay.

I had Mauritian fish stew and local Phoenix cider, and it was delicious. Fish and seafood were generally a highlight on the island.
