Travel to Sorrento Peninsula

Sorrento Peninsula

I was lucky to travel to the Sorrento Peninsula to visit a friend who had moved back from London! It is about an hour, without traffic, south of Naples. Unfortunately, there is almost always traffic, and we were stuck in the tunnel for a very long time.

Sorrento is the large city in the area, however there are many charming villages and nature spots nearby, including the Fiordo di Crapolla. For example, Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi is a charming town with many bars, restaurants, a church and some small nature hikes. Additionally, we loved the hike down to the Baia di Ieranto, a popular local swimming hangout. It does take some effort, especially to hike back up. Our highlight was having lunch and enjoying the sun at my friend’s restaurant and beach club, Conca Del Sogno.

Before you go

  • Plan your transport in advance, as it can be busy especially during tourist season
  • Book restaurants in advance
  • Tourist season is from around Easter through October but it’s most busy over the summer
  • Have some cash available for smaller shops
  • Most people speak English because of the large number of tourists
  • The area is very hilly and steep so be prepared if you want to go hiking

Transport

  • For the Sorrento area, the closest international airport is Naples (NAP).
  • We hired a car, and it was affordable, but not easy driving. Without traffic, it is about 1.5 hours, but unfortunately there is often traffic. We were sitting in a tunnel for over an hour and it took us about 2.5 hours. However, it was useful to have a car to get around the Sorrento Peninsula. There are some buses, but only to the main areas.
  • There are ferry boats from Naples to Sorrento with Alilauro and NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo). These are quick and scenic
  • Public buses also run between Naples and Sorrento, though you may need to transfer between buses

Accommodation

  • We stayed at a B&B in Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi. It is a very cute town and we got a very good price. However, I would not recommend it, because we had a lot of issues with leaks, parking, etc. I would recommend staying in a village if you have a car, because it is nice to be able to walk to shops and restaurants. You can also stay in Sorrento, a bigger city. My friend’s family owns Conca Del Sogno, a beautiful restaurant with some accommodation and a beach club. If you can afford a more upscale accommodation, then it would be a wonderful place to stay!
  • As usual I recommend checking reviews on Google Reviews or using AirBnB

Food

Da Mimi is a local restaurant in Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi that serves a huge variety of delicious Italian food. Luckily, we had my friend with us and he is from this village so he ordered for us. We enjoyed all of the dishes, especially stuffed zucchini flowers, arancini and fresh pasta.

For excellent Napolitan pizza, visit Ristorante Pizzeria I Quattro Venti in Sant’Agata Massa Lubrense.

Roxy Bar Di Coppola Giuseppina is a fun local bar to visit and relax.

Bar Orlando is an institution in Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi. A great place to hang out on the terrace for drinks and bar food while people-watching with the locals. Pizzas are very tasty and large! Famous for a smoking cat and a lucky lemon tree in the garden.

Piccola Gelateria del Corso has delicious, authentic gelato and it stays open late so you can go in the afternoon and again for a late night snack!

Tutt’Appost – Enoteca Winebar Bottle Shop is a restaurant and a bar, which gets very lively later at night. A nice selection of wines and other beverages.

Panifico Nonno Paolo is the local bakery in Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi with affordable and tasty baked goods. We picked some food up from there for our hike.

Conca del Sogno is a beautiful hotel, restaurant and beach club with a semi-private beach. Many people arrive by boat. We enjoyed the terrace views, the beach and the amazing food for lunch!

Ristorante Nastro D’Oro is a cosy restaurant with excellent food and specials of the day, especially for the fish and seafood. A nice sunset view and very friendly service.
