From Laxey, you can travel to Snaefell mountain on the dedicated electric railway. The train is very small so make sure to queue early. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning views out of the windows or the open door! Snaefell Mountain is the highest mountain on the Isle of Man at 2,037 feet (621 m) above sea level. From the top, you have a great view of the Isle. Also, on a clear day it is said that you can see the seven kingdoms: the Isle of Man, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Heaven, and Sea.

Before you go

  • It can be windy on the train and on top of the mountain
  • Prepare for all weather as it can change quickly. We had sunshine and drizzle

Transport

  • Snaefell Mountain railway is a small electric train that leaves from Laxey. The queue starts about 30 minutes before the departure, so keep an eye on it to ensure you can board the train. Luckily, the train is included in the Isle of Man Go Pass, but you can also buy individual tickets

Accommodation

  • There is no accommodation on the stop of Snaefell Mountain. However, there are places to stay en route, and you would probably need a car to reach them. We could visit via train from Douglas for a day trip.

Food

On the top of Snaefell Mountain, there is only one cafe, which is also the rail station. It has a lot of choices for sweet and savoury snacks, and plenty of seating. Most people were waiting there for the return train to Laxey. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. And there are clean toilets to use, regardless of whether you purchase something.

Part way down the mountain, the Victory Cafe is a famous viewpoint along the Tourist Trophy (TT) motorcycle race course.

A: No, it is easy to walk around to enjoy the area once you arrive on the train

A: Yes, everyone speaks English

Q: Is it a walkable area?

A: You’ll have to take either the train or a car to the area. However, if you are in the mood for hiking there are many places to walk in the hills.
